13 Reasons Why - Season 2

"13 reasons why is a fictional series that tackles tough, real world issues, taking a look at sexual assault, substance abuse, suicide and more. By shedding a light on these difficult topics, we hope our show can help viewers start a conversation. But if you are struggling with these issues yourself, this series may not be right for you, or you may want to watch it with a trusted adult." This is the message that is displayed at the beginning of each episode of season 2, after the heavily critiqued first season. Some of the more graphic scenes have globally caused quite a stir. Will season 2 be just as intense, or will the creators take it even further? If you've read up until this point, but haven't yet seen season 1, then I highly recommend watching season 1 first. I thought it was one of the most intense, intimate and powerful shows of last year and I couldn't wait for season 2.

Everyone has their own story, but is that story known to others?

I have to be honest. After watching all episodes in one go in one weekend, I wasn't sure if the second season had managed to convince me. Okay, I kept on watching, but was that because of the story, or was I just curious about how it would end and to see if it would end up getting better. When I spoke to others about the second season, I too noticed that I wasn't overly excited. And then I started to think about the story, which storylines I would've picked and how I would've constructed the season. At that point I came to the conclusion that this season was in fact very good.

The second season revolves around coping with the loss of Hannah and all characters do this in their own way. While watching, the viewer witnesses heartbreak, jealousy, hatred, feeling of incomprehension and various other emotions that come with mourning someone. You sympathize with teenagers of whom you previously thought had nothing to do with Hannah, you hope that the perpetrators get caught and you also hope that the other teenagers find a way to cope with everything going on. Each character is unique and I feel as if the creators have put a lot of effort into creating an individual story for each of them. This season isn't just about Hannah. Sexual harassment, rape, substance abuse, addictions, sex, weapons, regret, revenge and justice. Everyone has their own story, but are they aware of that?

The season finale was long, but it also was the best and most intense episode of the season. I won't tell you what happens and how it ends, but during this episode I finally realised what this entire season was about. I suddenly understood the structure that lead towards the finale. Yes, there's a very graphic scene, which understandably lead to some criticism, but I think that is what this show is all about. Consciousness and awareness. It tries to make sure that people who recognize themselves in these stories aren't afraid any more to come forward and talk about it. Even though the show can be quite intense and due to that there is quite some opposition, it does give you food for thought.

Altogether I came to appreciate the season a lot more once I finished it. In the end it is just a show and I think that the creators have made the right decision in keeping the same cast, instead of getting new actors and maybe even a new list of reasons. After this season I am even more curious about various characters and their personalities, background and individual storylines. So bring it on with season three! I'm looking forward to it!
