1883 - Season 1

Good and entertaining westerns are pretty scarce these days. All the more reason to enjoy these gems. Step into the wild west for a while with 1883.

1883 is the first prequel series to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone. In this series, you follow the post-war generation of the Dutton family. The series takes place at a time when the family does not yet own the land that will eventually become the Yellowstone ranch. The Dutton family escapes poverty by leaving Tennessee. They join a caravan and embark on a perilous journey to find happiness in Montana.

In this series, you follow, among others, Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott, The Ranch). Shea is a former captain who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. His wife and daughter both died of smallpox. It is heartbreaking to see him mourn their deaths. He contemplates suicide almost every day, but either changes his mind or is interrupted by the intervention of his good friend Thomas (LaMonica Garrett, The Terminal List).

Shea decides to accompany a group of German migrants on a hellish journey to Oregon with Thomas. He regularly makes appearances as the rugged leader of the caravan. With the aim of reminding the migrants of the danger and tragedy they will encounter along the way.

You will be immersed in the beauty of the open plains that are beautifully captured. At the same time you experience the contrast with the rawness and hardness of the wild west.

You also follow James Dutton (Tim McGraw, Yellowstone (2018)) and his accompanying family. He is from Tennessee and was a captain in the army during the Civil War. During the Battle of Antietam, he was wounded and captured. He was held in a Union POW camp for three years. A born leader and warrior, he joins the caravan with his family after meeting Shea and Thomas in Fort Worth, Texas.

The pace in this series is not too fast, but that is not disturbing at all in this case. It offers room for character development. As a viewer, you empathize with the journey they take in this way. You will be immersed in the beauty of the open plains that are beautifully captured.

At the same time, you experience the contrast with the rawness and hardness of the wild west. There are several elements that complicate the arduous journey. Nature is beautiful to see, but there are also great dangers. Every crossing of a river is a real challenge. They are dealing with an inexperienced group of people who do not know what they can and cannot eat or drink. The migrants are not gunfighters, but these kinds of dangers are also lurking. You should think of bandits, Indians and even mutiny within the group.

All experiences in this series are best shaped through the eyes of daughter Elsa Dutton (Isabel May, Alexa & Katie). At the beginning of the series, she is presented as a rich girl, dressed in a dress that is completely unsuitable for the journey that awaits her. It soon becomes apparent that she has a completely different character. She experiences everything with abandon. She fully enjoys the beautiful views, herding cattle and the freedom very much appeals to her. She is fooling around with a traveling cowboy and something beautiful blossoms between the two. She is inexperienced in many areas, but here too she lets her emotions and feelings run wild.

As outlined earlier, the wild west also brings with it a harsh reality. Elsa also has to deal with heartbreaking events. Because you as a viewer empathize with this group, it is touching and moving to see what they have to face. Because of all these events, Elsa has unintentionally grown into an adult woman at a rapid pace. I won't tell you how the series ends, of course, but this series will not leave you completely unmoved.

If you are a fan of westerns or Yellowstone (2018) then I would definitely recommend this series. Let yourself be carried away by beautiful locations, great gunfights and moving events. There is still uncertainty about whether 1883 will get a second season. The creator recently indicated that the sequel to this series is actually the other spin-off series 1923. In some countries, this series can be found on SkyShowtime.
