Created by Michael Schur, the series adopts an anthology format for the second season, with Charles (Danson) tackling a new undercover case each season. In the first season, he worked undercover at a retirement home. This time, the story unfolds at a liberal arts college, where Charles goes undercover as a professor and becomes involved in a mysterious extortion case.
The official plot is as follows: Charles Nieuwendyk is assigned a new undercover mission when Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), the president of Wheeler College, is threatened by an unknown extortionist. He asks Charles to infiltrate the investigation as a professor. The investigation points to several possible suspects, including the iconoclastic billionaire Brad Vinick (Gary Cole), a former student considering a substantial donation to the school.
While Charles tries to solve the case, he meets the free-spirited music teacher Mona (Mary Steenburgen), who helps him rediscover feelings he thought he had lost forever after his wife's death. He wonders: Is he ready to love again? Or worse, has he fallen in love with the person he's supposed to unmask?
Meanwhile, Charles's personal life also becomes more colorful. His daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) is inspired by her father's changes and rediscovers a long-neglected passion. At the same time, private investigator Julie (Lilah Richcreek) embarks on her own journey of growth when she reconnects with a significant figure from her past.
The second season features an expanded cast including Stephanie Beatriz, Michaela Conlin, Lisa Gilroy, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Madison Hu, Sam Huntington, Jason Mantzoukas, Constance Marie, Linda Park, David Strathairn, and Jill Talley.
The series is based on the documentary The Mole Agent, nominated for an Oscar in 2012.
The second season of A Man on the Inside premieres on Thursday, November 20th. See more first-look photos below.
