Netflix gives green light to A Different World sequel

Hillman College is reopening its doors in a modern version of the iconic NBC sitcom A Different World.
Netflix has officially given the green light for the sequel series to A Different World, set decades after the original and following a new generation of students at the fictional HBCU (Historically Black College or University).

The new series centers around Deborah, played by Tony Award-winner Maleah Joi Moon (pictured). She is the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison)—the beloved main characters from the original series. Deborah enrolls at the same university where her parents once studied and tries to carve out her own path, independent of their shadow.

Debbie Allen, who directed the majority of the episodes of the original, returns to the director's chair for the pilot and two additional episodes of the first season.

Showrunner Felicia Pride stated: “It is a tremendous honor to be part of the return of this iconic series—a program that had a profound impact on my youth and my life. We are proudly working on a reinterpretation that will appeal to both devoted fans and new viewers.”

The original A Different World (1987–1993), a spin-off of The Cosby Show, began with Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) going to college, but truly found its voice when Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison took over the lead roles. The series was praised for its honest and positive portrayal of life at an HBCU, with themes surrounding identity, racism, love, and ambition.

The new cast, alongside Moon, includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece.
