A to Z - Pilot

'A to Z' tells the story of Andrew (Ben Feldman, ‘Mad Men’) and Zelda (Christin Milioti, ‘How I Met Your Mother’). Two people meet by coincidence and fall in love. ‘A to Z’ follows their relationship from that moment onwards and is supported by a voice-over by Katey Sagal. The series premièred on 2 October 2014. Funny fact is that his name starts with an A and hers with a Z. Coincidence? Is the series trying too hard or will this become a real hit? I’m not so sure about that.

Andrew works for an online dating site and Zelda is a lawyer. He is a real romantic, she loves order and control. The first episode shows the day they met and how their relationship started. In total, they will date for eight months, three weeks, five days and one hour. We are literally following their relationship from A to Z. What happens next? They will probably break up, but what happens next will definitely depend on whether or not the series will get a second season.

As always in romantic comedies, the series is full of clichés. That is not necessarily a reason for me not to watch. As a real romantic, I kind of like clichés. I chuckled when I saw all the moments they ran into each other, but did not see each other. It’s a cliché, but nicely done. Especially when you see her dog sneakily eating his sandwich. I did like the jokes, but I didn’t laugh that hard.

I immediately fell for Andrew. He is funny and cute and it is nice to see the man as a romantic instead of the woman for a change. However, I do miss chemistry between Andrew and Zelda, and this is mainly caused by Zelda – or maybe it is the portrayal of the character by Christin Milioti? You watch them fall into each other’s arms, but I’m not rooting for them yet. Her character stands on its own too much to make it believable that she suddenly falls in love with Andrew. In addition, as a viewer, I didn't connect with her yet.

After having watched the pilot, I am unable to say whether the series will become a hit or a miss. My gut tells me this is a comedy which has the level of an average comedy, but it won’t be the first time that a channel has renewed an average series. Andrew’s sexist best friend is a bit overdone, but Zelda’s best friend is – in a positive way - exactly what I would expect from a series like this. I was easily distracted when watching this episode, which indicates that the series didn’t manage to grab my attention. I will try the first few episodes, but I don’t expect it to become a favourite.
