Adolescence Sets New Record on Netflix's Most Popular TV Series of All Time

Adolescence Sets New Record on Netflix's Most Popular TV Series of All Time

In just three weeks, Adolescence has become one of the most popular Netflix series of all time.
The limited series racked up an additional 30.4 million views between March 24 and March 30, bringing the series to 96.7 million views since its debut. That was good enough to land at number 9 on the list of most popular English TV series/films of all time, knocking Bridgerton season two off the list and Stranger Things season three into tenth place.

Adolescence

It’s highly likely that Adolescence will continue to climb the “most popular” chart, given that numbers 7 and 8 (The Night Agent season 1 and miniseries Fool Me Once, respectively) are both around 98 million views.

By this time next week, Adolescence will likely have surpassed both titles and may even climb even higher. The third through sixth spots on the chart are all around 100 million viewers, which is perfectly within reach for Adolescence, given that it has 72 days left in its premiere window to rack up those viewers.

The rest of Netflix's Top 10 Most Popular TV Shows of All Time includes: Bridgerton season three (#6), The Queen's Gambit (#5), Bridgerton season 1 (#4), Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (#3), Stranger Things season four (#2), and Wednesday season 1 (#1).

According to Netflix, Adolescence is a hit around the world, ranking in the weekly Top 10 in all 93 countries where the chart is available.

Shonda RhimesThe Residence came in second on the weekly English TV chart, with 8.8 million views in its first full week on the streamer. While that’s a bit of a boost from its premiere weekend, it’s still a bit of a disappointing performance for the whodunit. It’s unclear whether this performance will result in a Netflix renewal.

The unprecedented success of Adolescence is due to several factors. First of all, the series plays on current and poignant themes. The story revolves around a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murder and highlights topics such as juvenile delinquency and the influence of social media. These themes appeal to a wide audience and encourage reflection.

In addition, the production is of a high standard. Directed by Philip Barantini and with strong performances, including by Stephen Graham, the series is praised as a “captivating rollercoaster of emotions” and a “cinematic work of art”.
