Successful Netflix series Adolescence becomes teaching material in Dutch schools

Dutch secondary schools will soon be able to show the popular Netflix series Adolescence to their students for free.
The media institute Beeld & Geluid (Video & Sound) will also develop suitable teaching materials together with Netflix that address important topics from the series, NOS reports.

Adolescence follows thirteen-year-old Jamie Miller, who is accused of murdering his classmate Katie. The four-part series explores the so-called manosphere, a sexist online community that turns against feminism and women.

Adolescence

De Britse serie is niet alleen door het onderwerp, maar ook door de filmstijl een grote hit. Elke aflevering bestaat uit slechts één shot.

"The series is ideally suited to start a conversation with young people about the role of media in their lives," says Beeld & Geluid director Eppo van Nispen tot Sevenaer. "Precisely because the world of young people is sometimes far removed from that of parents and teachers, it is important to learn to have that conversation."

Adolescence was previously offered free of charge to secondary schools in the UK, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling it "an important initiative to encourage as many pupils as possible to watch". Starmer, a father of two, found the series hard-hitting but educational. "As a father who has watched it with his teenage son and daughter, I can tell you it hits hard," he said.

We used to watch movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List at school.

I turned this series off after 1.5 episodes because the story was so slow.

I had already posted the below elsewhere on myserie, but it now seems more applicable to this “newer” news item about the series Adolescence.

The unprecedented success of Adolescence is due to several factors. The most important factor is that the series plays on current and poignant themes. The story revolves around a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murder and highlights topics such as juvenile delinquency and the influence of social media. These themes appeal to a wide audience and make you think.

I haven't been in school for a while and I don't feel like this series was made for me. I also have no interest in the subject matter. Whatever. I don't join in the hype.
