American Gothic (2016) - First episode
Who did it? This is, in fact, the key question in the new CBS series, created, produced and written by Corinne Brinkerhoff (Jane the Virgin, The Good Wife and Elementary). In addition, American Gothic boasts a lot of well-known actors and actresses: for instance Antony Starr (Banshee), Juliet Rylance (The Knick) and Gabriel Bateman (Outcast).
Now they all form one family and one member is a serial killer: the Silver Bells Killer. A killer, who as the name already implies, leaves a silver bell next to his victim.

Garret (Antony Starr), one of the sons, has not been home in 14 years. The other son, Cam Hawthorne (Justin Chatwin, Shameless), is a bit of a weirdo. He has a strange haircut and a history of drug abuse. His son Jack (Gabriel Bateman, Outcast) is a would-be serial killer; his gruesome drawings are scary and depict detailed renderings of human and animal dissections. Their sister Alison (Juliet Rylance, The Knick) is in politics and the other sister Tessa (Megan Ketch, Jane The Virgin) is trying to keep everyone in line. An impossible job when you are part of a dysfunctional family. When Mitchell has a heart attack, Tessa helps Cam to search for his well-hidden stash of drugs. When they find a box filled with silver bells, things really start to unfold.
Hopefully this family will stay together for a while, at least long enough to find out who did it.
The first episode of American Gothic gets a 7.5 from me. In part because of Gabriel Bateman's creepy behaviour and the return of Antony Starr, who was amazing in Banshee.

American Gothic revolves around the Hawthornes, a rich family from Boston. Mitchell, the dad, (Jamey Sheridan, Arrow) and mum Madeline (Virginia Madsen, Witches of East End) are quickly caught in the web of the Silver Bells Killer. A murder case that hit a dead end 14 years ago. Now the case is being reopened, because part of a concrete fly-over collapsed and new evidence has been found. American Gothic is a show where mysteries and secrets are the key elements. The 'whodunnit' story fits in perfectly. I thought I knew who the serial killer was from the beginning of the episode, but as the episode neared the ending I started to have doubts. I am really curious to see how this series is going to develop. I hope they can keep up the suspense for a long time. I fear that if they can't keep up the suspense, boredom will strike. Cam's hair and Tessa's naïve behaviour will become minor annoyances.I fear that if they can't keep up the suspense, boredom will strike.
