That's one of the more pertinent questions posed in the official trailer for American Primeval, the Pete Berg-directed series for Netflix about life in the American West in 1857.

Written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), the drama promises to show how “pain is everywhere” and “innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear.”
American Primeval stars Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Derek Hinkey, Joe Tippett, Jai Courtney, Preston Mota, Shawnee Pourier, and Shea Whigham.
The Indigenous cast includes Hovia Edwards-Yellowjohn, Pete Yellowjohn, Georgette Running Eagle, Robert Perry, Kugee Supernaw and Son Supernaw, Joe Cheshawalla, Debbie Cheshawalla, and Molly Murphy Adams.
Guest stars include Kim Coates, Lucas Neff, Kyle Davis, Tokala Black Elk, Nick Hargrove, Irene Bedard, Nanabah Grace, Alex Breaux, Dominic Bogart, Alex Fine, Kip Weeks, and Jeremiah Bitsui.
Berg and Smith produce with Eric Newman and Alex Gayner. Julie O'Keefe serves as Indigenous Cultural Consultant and Project Advisor.
American Primeval debuts Thursday, January 9 on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
