Sequel to Sex and the City can't really captivate twenty years later. The sequel to Sex and the City is called And Just Like That... and premiered at the end of 2021 on HBO Max. The predecessor was a popular series about four girlfriends in Manhattan, New York, for six seasons in the 1990s. The thirty-somethings talked to each other about sex, friendship, sex, men, sex, fashion, sex, love and sex. Sometimes the series was superficial, but maybe that was because it was an American series, but at least it was new, cheerful and sparked discussion.
Twenty years later, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker, Divorce) is still a columnist, but is now married to her great love Mr. Big (Chris Noth, The Good Wife). She also performs in podcasts, but she finds that extremely uncomfortable. Her best friends are still Charlotte York (Kristin Davis, Bad Teacher) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon, Ratched). The nymphomaniac Samantha Jones (Kim Catrall, Modus) has since moved on and is only mentioned when she sends text messages.
I found it a bit cringe-inducing to watch this first season of the series. It felt made and the dialogues were not natural. The atmosphere is also very different between the episodes, which also makes it difficult to describe the series in terms of tone. Perhaps it doesn't help that the original episodes all had a fixed pattern and all lasted a maximum of half an hour. Now the episodes range from 35 to 45 minutes.
I found it difficult to pay attention and take the characters seriously. It's nice to see many guest stars from the original and to recognize them from other shows they've appeared in this century. But then those guest actors and actresses get very short roles, or are used in scenes that I didn't think fit the original.
The DVD of this first season is also a bare-bones affair. The DVD is shipped in a cardboard box. The episodes can be seen in the original English and dubbed French language and there are subtitles in Dutch, French and English for the hearing impaired. No extras are included, so this release will only appeal to die-hard fans. HBO has long and broadly extended the series for a second season, which will start on June 22, 2023 in the USA. I don't think I will watch that season.
About the writer, Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
