Anoniem - First two episodes

Jurre Jansen is a history teacher who leads a fairly simple and boring life in Anoniem (Anonymous). One evening he unwittingly witnesses an almost rape and manages to chase the perpetrator away.

When I read the summary of Anoniem, I was not immediately inclined to add this series to my watch list. The story of a boring history teacher who unexpectedly saves someone from a rape and is labeled an anonymous hero by her on social media, did not really appeal to the imagination.

What made me change my mind was watching the trailer of this Dutch drama series when I put together my weekly overview of the starting series on Dutch-language channels. That trailer was anything but boring and there was clearly more to this series than what the intro text made it seem.

Jurre Jansen (Jeroen Spitzenberger, Ooogappels) is a history teacher who leads a rather boring life. He is married to Sarah (Anniek Pheifer, Westenwind), a public prosecutor who is more married to her work than to Jurre. Together they have a daughter, Ella (Mies van Rooijen, Penoza) and a son, Boet (Sil van der Zwan).

Jurre's wife regularly spends the night at work and it doesn't just stay overnight. Jurre himself goes to work and tries to keep the children in line. On an evening walk, he catches a man trying to rape a woman and manages to chase the assailant away. The almost raped woman tells her story on social media and calls him her anonymous hero.

Slowly but surely this gets through to Jurre and all kinds of bells start ringing. Especially when he notices that there is dealing at the school where he teaches and finds his son under the influence. At first, he tries to saddle his daughter to keep his son away from the stuff, but eventually he takes the plunge and goes to school to catch the dealers in the act. What then follows is an explosion of violence from which Jurre does not escape completely unscathed. In addition, the domino that Jurre has pushed over ensures that the other stones in the row also start to fall over one by one.

This soon becomes clear in episode two, in which the focus is initially on Jurre's wife, her job and the man, a major drug criminal, who she has charged. Thanks to her father, her daughter also gets entangled in the criminal drug circuit because the dealer, who has been eliminated by Jurre, wants to help recover the lost drug money.

Those first two episodes make it clear that we are facing some exciting weeks in which the Jansen family will have to stand their ground more than once to survive.

At the start of the first episode, Anoniems also seems to be a boring affair. It takes a while for the series to get going a bit with the rape scene. But that boring beginning also perfectly reflects Jurre's life at that time. The same beginning returns in the second episode in which wife Sarah comes to the fore. It also takes a while for things to get going there, but as a viewer, you also realize afterward that this approach does work.

Anoniem, therefore, seems more than worth looking at further. The story may be a bit exaggerated, but who cares if it provides a portion of entertainment on Sunday evening?
