The CW has changed its plans concerning the The Flash pilot. The character was scheduled to make appearances in episode 8 and 9 of Arrow this season, returning in episode 20 which would serve as a back-door pilot. With the first two episodes already in the can, the CW is looking to change the back-door pilot into an actual pilot.
Screenings of episode 8 and 9, called ‘The Scientist’ and ‘Three Ghosts’, have been well received, encouraging the network to go ahead with the pilot as a stand-alone episode. The first two Arrow episodes will serve as an introductory to the character of the Flash (played by Glee’s Grant Gustin). David Nutter, who also directed the Arrow pilot, was attached to shoot Episode 20 and will now helm the Flash pilot. Ties with the Arrow-universe will be subtle, as the creative team of the original show, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Keisberg, Melissa Kellner Berman and writer Geoff Johns will take care of the pilot.
In ‘The Scientist’, The Flash will be introduced as his alter ego Barry Allen, a forensics investigator at the police department. He’ll investigate a series of robberies that might have something to do with his troubled past. Allen is rumored to be a comic book fanboy, obsessed with the Arrow, who unintentionally comes in contact with Oliver and Felicity.
Though no commitment to the series has been made, the move to a pilot order isn’t all that surprising. Last year The CW successfully introduced 'The Originals', which recently got a full season order, in a back-door pilot in its flagship series 'The Vampire Diaries'. Consequently, the actual pilot that aired this fall was somewhat critized for repeating the material seen in the back-door pilot, as to not alienate new viewers. By giving 'The Flash' its own pilot, the creators have the liberty to introduce the show without too many ties to the Arrow story lines. Such faith in the creative team is warranted, with Berlanti’s 'The Tomorrow People' also picked up for a full season.
