“In the fictional year 845, chaos ensues in the Shiganshina district where young Erin Yeager lives with his adopted sister, Mikasa Ackermann, and his parents. Everything stopped when the Colossal Titan looked over the wall.” Attack on Titan is a Japanese anime based on Hajime Isayama's manga. The story takes place in a dark fantasy world where humans are almost threatened with extinction. Their last means of survival is a gigantic wall of about 60 meters that protects them from the things outside. What happens outside the walls comes close to a horror story.
The story focuses on Eren Yaeger (Bryce Papenbrook, Sword Art Online series), his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackermann (Trina Nishimura, My Hero Academia), and their childhood friend Armin Arlelt (Josh Grelle, Psycho Pass). Their lives are forever changed after the appearance of the Colossal Titan that caused the destruction of their hometown and the deaths of Erin and Mikasa their mother. The three join the Scout Regiment, an elite group of soldiers fighting beyond the walls for human survival, and vow to take revenge and reclaim the world from the Titans.
No nonsense or mushy stuff
The anime starts right away with a good opening. No nonsense or gooey stuff. Anyone can die at any time and they will often in this series. The story takes place in a world where technology as we know it does not yet exist. We see how new strategies are used to beat the Titans and how this can sometimes go horribly wrong. The series comes with great background stories of some of the characters, which takes the story to the next level for me. Not only have to focus on the common thread, but also what is behind it.
If you have read the manga, then watching season 1 is highly recommended again. You know things that you are not supposed to know yet and this causes you to pay attention to other things. All in all, Attack on Titan is definitely one of my favorite series. Even if it could be a little better on some points, such as the speed of the story. The dark, imaginatively filled world full of mystery, the superbly written story and the animation all ensure that I will definitely watch it for a 12th time, followed by the slightly lesser, but still good 2nd season.
