Back to Life - Season 1 and 2

Comedy isn't really my favorite genre. But for a six-episode British series, I'm happy to make an exception. The series was pretty fun, which made me binge season two after it.
Back to Life is a 2019 BBC series now streaming on Disney+ in various countries. It is set in a coastal town in Kent. Daisy Haggard (Breeders) plays the lead role and she also wrote the script.

Haggard plays Miri Matteson, a woman in her thirties who returns to her childhood home after serving an 18-year prison sentence. Given the sentence, you can guess what happened. The residents of her hometown are not happy with her return and are extremely hostile, which manifests itself in feces being sent in the mail, offensive graffiti on her parents' garden wall, and rejected job applications.

The first season mainly revolves around the mystery surrounding what exactly happened the night Miri committed her crime. This is further complicated by a strange Scandinavian man who apparently re-examines the case. He seems convinced that some truth has yet to come to light. He also finds out about Miri's mother's affair with an old acquaintance of Miri.

Miri's friendship with Billy, the neighbor who takes care of his mentally ill wife, also comes up. We see ex-girlfriend Mandy, one of the people who was with Miri the night the crime was committed. Oh, and then there's Miri's headstrong probation officer Janice, who eases all her client's concerns as she makes her way through the provided refreshments. Really hilarious character.

With a smile and a tear

The second season of Back to Life continues right where season 1 stopped. After that, it is also clear that it will remain with two seasons. The soul of the story is mainly in Miri's attempts to build a life that has been on pause for half the time. She's an optimist, not in a maddening or unbelievable way, but just as ordinary people can be.

The script is fine. It shows delicate relationships and deftly switches between sadness and joy. It's a world where buying an ice cream can be a gesture that moves you to tears.

In short: a great series, which few of you have seen. I enjoyed binging these two seasons and it also made me think. People deserve a second chance!

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
