Bodies (2023) - First episode

The supernatural detective series Bodies (2023) starts atmospheric and promising. It presents a bizarre mystery that begs to be solved.
Have Stephen Graham (This is England) in a detective series and I'm interested. Give that detective a supernatural edge and I'm convinced. And that is what the Netflix series Bodies (2023), based on the comic book of the same name by Si Spencer, did. In this series, four detectives investigate the murder of a man found naked in an alley in London. The problem? The body and location are identical, but the four detectives all live in a different era.

The different eras have been creatively depicted

In the first episode we mainly see how the detectives Hasan (Amaka Okafor, The Responder) from 2023, Whiteman (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Wolf Hall) from 1941 and Hillinghead (Kyle Soller, Poldark) from 1890 find the body and how they star their murder investigation. It provides a solid introduction to these three main characters and their worlds. Using creative film techniques, the necessary parallels are drawn between the three.

The actors do a great job, but I have to say that I think the actors who play Hasan and Hillinghead seem a lot more capable than Whiteman. Their storylines are also much better developed than Whiteman's. I understand that a historical context must be outlined to bring the world of the main characters to life, but personally, I find the Victorian era a lot more interesting than the Second World War. However, both 1890 and 1941 look very attractive.

Bodies presents a bizarre and intriguing puzzle

The fourth detective, Maplewood (Shira Haas, Unorthodox) from 2053, has not yet been given anything special to do, just like Stephen Graham's character. I do expect to see more of them in future episodes. The unique premise of this series is interesting and especially in the storyline in 2023, the necessary puzzle pieces for this mystery are strewn around that invite you to continue looking. The first episode also has a very surprising ending.

With an original premise, an intriguing mystery and an atmospheric world, Bodies (2023) starts promisingly. I will definitely continue watching and I am very curious about the rest of the season.

I've now seen the first 2 episodes. And I also think that the 1941 part is less prominent than the rest. And I'm also curious about the rest

Good series. A 7 from me because sometimes I didn't understand much of it. Very well captured the atmosphere in the different years.
