Netflix shares trailer for comedic coming-of-age drama series Boots

Netflix has released the official trailer for Boots, the new coming-of-age dramedy from Norman Lear, which addresses the theme of being gay in the military.
Boots follows the aimless, not-yet-out Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, and his straight best friend Ray McAffey, portrayed by Liam Oh. Together, they join the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990, during a time when homosexuality was banned in the military.

The duo finds themselves in a diverse group of recruits who are pushed to their physical and emotional limits during the grueling training. Their drill sergeant McKinnon, played by Cedrick Cooper, makes it clear that they shouldn't expect an easy ride when he addresses them with the words: "What I see here is a collection of assholes, losers, and fatasses."

Between the exhausting exercises, Cameron and Ray support each other while Cameron struggles with his identity. When Ray warns him that it would be tough, Cameron dryly responds, "I thought you meant something like mud and a few bug bites."

In addition to Heizer and Oh, Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) appears as Cameron's narcissistic mother Barbara. Other key roles are played by Max Parker, Ana Ayora, Angus O'Brien, Dominic Goodman, Kieron Moore, Nicholas Logan, Rico Paris, and Blake Burt.

The cast also includes Brandon Tyler Moore, Zach Roerig, Anthony Marble, Joy Osmanski, Ivan Hoey Jr., Logan Gould, Jack Kay, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Jonathan Nieves, and Brett Dalton.

Boots, inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoirs The Pink Marine, premieres on Thursday, October 9. Watch the trailer below.
