Everything looked hopeful when the series was first announced by Netflix in January 2022, on the heels of the ratings blockbuster Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Nick Kyrgios and Coco Gauff were two of the stars featured in the first season of Break Point, and tennis organizations united to help bring the sport to the screen. In March 2023, the series was renewed for a second season released in January 2024.
However, The Times reports that the producers, who had intimate access to figures on and off the track in Formula 1: Drive to Survive, became frustrated by the hoops they had to jump through to feature tennis' biggest stars. And the series failed to prominently feature what is undoubtedly the tennis world's biggest story of the past two years, the controversy sparked by Novak Djokovic's failed bid to play in the Australian Open after taking the Covid vaccine refused. As a result, the paper reports, the series is unlikely to return unless ratings for the second season improve significantly.
Better news for Netflix is that in addition to the continued success of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, golf has also been on an upward trajectory as Full Swing's cameras reveal that sport's biggest debacle, the ongoing rivalry between the PGA Tour and the LIV circuit.
