Eric Dane to guest star as ALS patient in Brilliant Minds season two

It's a case of art imitating life in an upcoming episode of Brilliant Minds. Grey's Anatomy actor Eric Dane will have a major guest role in season two of the NBC drama series.
Eric Dane, who announced in April that he has been diagnosed with ALS, will appear in Brilliant Minds season two as Matthew, a heroic firefighter struggling to share his diagnosis with his family. NBC has also released some photos of Dane and lead actor Zachary Quinto on set.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is “a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.” The disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, has an unknown cause and no cure; treatments can slow its progression but not stop it.

Dane recently missed a scheduled Grey's Anatomy reunion during the 77th Emmy Awards due to his diagnosis. He revealed he had received "stitches" in his head after losing his balance and falling in his kitchen, shortly before he was set to take the stage with former co-star Jesse Williams.

Brilliant Minds is inspired by the extraordinary life and work of world-renowned author and neurologist Oliver Sacks. The series follows Dr. Oliver Wolf (Quinto), a brilliant and eccentric neurologist, and his team of assistants as they explore the last great frontier of science – the human mind – while also confronting their own mental health and relationships.

The cast also includes Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, Teddy Sears, and Donna Murphy.

Dane, best known from Grey's Anatomy, is currently working on season three of HBO's Euphoria and was recently seen in the Prime Video thriller series Countdown, where he stars alongside Jensen Ackles.
