Castle - Season 4
After the exciting season finale of season 3, season 4 finally arrived three months later. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait that long. This season continues where season 3 ended: the funeral of Captain Montgomery and the shooting of detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). After Becket was shot, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion, Two Guys and a Girl) finally tells her how he feels about her (something we have been waiting for the last three seasons). As expected, Becket survives the shooting and goes back to work after three months of rehabilitation. But she says she doesn’t remember anything of the shooting.
Meanwhile, some changes have been made at the police station: after the death of Captain Montgomery, Victoria “Iron” Gates (Penny Johnson, 24) has become the new Captain. She’s a strict, no-nonsense woman who prefers to be called “sir”.
While Becket and Castle try to figure out who shot Becket, everyday life continues and there are murders that need to be solved. This season, once again features the craziest murder cases, like murdered superheroes and ghost hunters. My personal favourite is “The Blue Butterfly” in which Castle tries to solve a murder that happened in the 1940s. He finds the diary of a private detective and identifies himself with the detective, which results in the funniest scenes.
Besides the cases at work, the private lives of the main characters also play a part in this season. How is Alexis (Castle’s daughter, played by Molly Quin) going to handle her choice of studies? And how is Beckett going to deal with the shooting at the funeral? But the most important question of this season: are Castle and Becket finally going to be together? After confessing his love for Becket, Beckett says she remembers nothing of the shooting. But is this the truth? And more importantly, will they finally be together?
A lot of things happen in this season and that is certainly a point in this show's favour. I like shows with a quick pace, and Castle has that. The cases that they handle every week are usually very interesting, though somewhat far-fetched. Once you get passed that, it is a very nice show and it is fun to see what kind of crazy things the scriptwriters have come up with this time. The acting is fine, not perfect, but definitely not bad. Captain Iron Gates is a nice addition to the cast. Some of the supporting actors are not that good, but that is not uncommon for shows like this. I have not seen horrible acting in this season.
The season finale makes you want to watch the next season as a good finale should do and luckily for us, that season is already available. The only downside is the predictability of this show. Don’t expect surprising plot twists or really big events, but most viewers of the show already know that. The show is an easy one to watch and often funny as well. In my opinion a very nice show and therefore this 8.0. May there be many more seasons!
