Castlevania - Season 1

Before I start, it may be good to tell you that there will be mild spoilers in this review.

It is mid-15th century. The church 'rules' over a country called Wallachia and a woman goes on a quest to find forbidden knowledge with Vlad Dracula Tepes, who decides to hire her due to her courage and passion. In return, Lisa will tell Vlad how he can see more of the world. Eventually the two fall in love. All looks well, but 20 years later, when Lisa is wrongly accused of witchcraft and is burned at the stake, this all changes. These events will make sure that Wallachia has to deal with all the rage of a legendary creature.

A somewhat funny drunk.

This first part of the story focuses on Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage, Berlin Station), the youngest and last survivor of the Belmont family. A somewhat funny drunk, who, whilst travelling, learns of the attacks by Dracula and of a nearby village called Gresit. In this village the inhabitants accuse a group known as 'The Speakers' of being responsible for these attacks. After having several conversations with some locals who want this group out of their town, Trevor decides to help the group fulfill their prophecy.

When night falls, Dracula comes to claim the village. With some help from Speaker Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso, Winx Club) and the locals, Belmont manages to defend the village. During this attack Belmont and Sypha end up getting stuck in the Gresit catacombs and accidentally they find what they've been searching for.

There's 'only' four episodes and each lasts for approximately 20 minutes.

I actually thought this series was quite difficult to write about, without spoiling a lot. There's 'only' four episodes and each lasts for approximately 20 minutes. That is not a lot. I do, however, think that these episodes were well constructed, especially for a first part. What I also think is really cool, is how they stayed true to the video game (Castlevania III: Dracula's curse). I am quite curious about the sequel. We got to take a look at a fictional version of medieval times where god, satan and magic are regular topics. Normally, this is a theme that I'm not interested in, but for some reason this show managed to keep my attention. For that reason alone, I can't wait for the second season.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
