Charmed (2018) - Season 4

The last season of Charmed (2018) had a new witch and strong storylines, but to no avail: canceled.
A new season, a new witch. At the end of the previous season, actress Madeleine Mantock had indicated that she wanted to stop. That meant that sister Macy Vaughn was then written out of the series. In the fourth (and, ultimately, final) season, we see how the sisters deal with the loss of Macy and how they find a new witch to make the Charmed Ones whole again.

This new witch is Mikaela or 'Kaela', played by Australian Lucy Barrett (Bloom). Kaela has the magical power that she can make what she draws appear in real life. This is called the power of manifestation in the series. One of the central storylines in the season is that Kaela must learn to deal with these powers. In addition, she has to find a place in a house with two grieving sisters, which also causes enough friction. It is also not entirely clear why she is a Charmed One, which leaves all three with questions.

In addition to these internal problems, there are also a number of external problems this season. It turns out that the magical community is not satisfied with the work of Charmed Ones. These community creatures feel undervalued and unseen, hence their name: the Unseen. These Unseen are the biggest threat in the season.

All in all, this makes for an interesting season, arguably the best season of the series. It feels a little less childish than the previous seasons. In addition, a number of interesting supporting characters are introduced that really contribute to the story. Harry is parked a bit to the side which is actually a good thing; at some point his storylines in the previous seasons got a bit tedious. We also see Maggie and Mel mourn the loss of Macy in their own ways.

On the other hand, this season will of course also have a number of problems. The special effects are still a bit disappointing in 2021/2022. Much of what can or can't be done with magic turns out to be based on easing up the cgi instead of really thinking about how the world works. Decisions are still regularly made by characters that are obviously very dumb. Other than that, the last episode is a bit meh. Not necessarily bad, but not really good either. That may also be because they suddenly had to produce them after the decision to stop.

That does not alter the fact that this is one of the better seasons of the series. The somewhat less childish tone and the solid central storyline ensure that. Where the previous season often mainly told how good the sisters were, this season elaborates a bit more.

That is precisely why I personally think it is a pity that the series has now been canceled; I would have understood it a little better if that had happened after the previous season. Things seemed to be moving in the right direction now. On the other hand, it's not the end of the world either; there are series where I have been more saddened by the cancelation. Still, I'm going to miss this series full of girl power every now and then. No more Charmed (2018).
