The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Season 1

A few weeks ago Netflix released the first season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I was looking forward to this show. Mainly, because I was a huge fan of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but also because this show has been created by the team that also made Riverdale, which is another show that I really like. On the other hand, I was a bit worried about setting the bar a bit too high.

The show takes place in the town of Greendale. Here it always feels as if it is Halloween. The girl, Sabrina Spellman (Kierman Shipka), half witch and half human can now be seen online. On her sixteenth birthday she is forced to pick between the path of the night, which is led by the devil or the path of the light. This pretty much means that she has to choose between being a witch or to remain human. In this show you follow the duality of good and bad. This happens in the story, but is also visible in the characters. The choice Sabrina makes is obvious from the very first moment. Sabrina chooses the dark path and becomes a witch. After she has decided, she has to deal with racism, as being both human and a witch is quite uncommon. Together with aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis), aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto), cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo), boyfriend Harvey (Ross Lynch) and her black cat, Salem, she has to deal with all the evil forces threatening the city.

On the internet I read a lot of mixed opinions. Some were really positive as they considered the show to be very exciting, whereas others were a tad negative as the show is seen as unrealistic. Some of the monsters looked a bit fake. I actually feel a bit conflicted about this show. I was a bit upset that the show didn't feel like the old one, and I expected that it would. I thought that some things were a bit fake and I thought that it wasn't that exciting. Sometimes I found it incredibly difficult to pay attention as I just wasn't interested during a couple of moments. I do think that the characters were interesting, they were portrayed well and somehow I found myself watching all of it. Season 2 has already been announced and I'm definitely going to watch that, just to see if I can become a bit more positive about the show and I do have the feeling that that'll happen.

If you like fantasy shows with a couple of feel-good moments, then I definitely recommend this show. Just don't expect too much.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

Yes, I also found the most annoying the haze or mist should not have been, but otherwise toppi.
