The six-episode series – the streamer's most ambitious Italian original series to date – is the first season of Prime Video's high-concept Citadel franchise that launched in April 2023. The series is intended to be a launching pad for multiple series set in different countries and all connected through plot and characters.
De Angelis, a rising Italian star, made her international breakthrough in Susanne Bier's The Undoing, alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. She also appeared opposite Liev Schrieber in the Ernest Hemingway adaptation Across the River and Into the Trees, directed by Paula Ortiz.
Citadel: Diana is set in 2030 Milan, where eight years earlier the independent global spy agency Citadel was wiped out by Manticore, a powerful enemy syndicate that manipulates the world from the shadows. Since then, undercover Citadel agent Diana Cavalieri has been "trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in Manticore," as the accompanying synopsis puts it.
The only way out is to rely on an unexpected ally, Edo Zani, the heir of Manticore Italy and son of Ettore, the head of the Italian organization, who struggles for leadership of the evil syndicate against other European families.
In addition to De Angelis, the cast of the Italian version of Citadel includes Lorenzo Cervasio, who plays Edo Zani; Maurizio Lombardi, who plays Ettore Zani; Thekla Reuten, Julia Piaton, Filippo Nigro and Bernhard Schütz.
Citadel: Diana, as previously announced, will launch worldwide on Prime Video on Thursday, October 10.
The series is produced by Rome-based Cattleya (known for Gomorrah (2014)), which is part of ITV Studios, and Amazon MGM Studios. The series is produced by AGBO of the Russo Brothers. Gina Gardini (Gomorrah (2014), ZeroZeroZero) is the showrunner.
Citadel: Diana is directed by Arnaldo Catinari and developed by Alessandro Fabbri, who is also the head writer. He wrote the series together with Ilaria Bernardini, Gianluca Bernardini, Laura Colella and Giordana Mari.
