Yahoo saves 'Community' for sixth season

'Community' lives! Cancelled by NBC, the gang returns for 'Community's sixth season. A day before the actors' contracts expired, internet juggernaut Yahoo picked up the rights for the show. Six seasons and a movie!

Yahoo Screen ordered thirteen episodes of the cult-hit, which after five low-rated seasons on NBC was put to sleep. For a while there were talks with streaming-service Hulu, but those fell through last week. Now Yahoo, which recently announced it wanted to produce its own shows, stepped in to save the day. The show won't differ from the one fans have come to love. Creator Dan Harmon returns, just like every cast member.

“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo," Harmon says in a statement. "I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!"

Zack van Amburg, president of programming at Sony, who is known for his exceptional efforts to save series after an initial cancellation, adds: "The budget won’t be cut one dollar. We didn’t want to be producing the show at any less of the quality or production value that we had been producing. Yahoo came in with finances that were undeniable.” Only the length of the episodes could change, varying from the conventional 21 minutes. The two parties have yet to reach an agreement on this subject. "If anything they will be longer," van Amburg says.

Brand-new episodes of 'Community' will arrive online this fall on Yahoo.
