Fan favorite returns in Criminal Minds: Evolution

An old acquaintance makes a long-awaited return to Criminal Minds: Evolution. Matthew Gray Gubler will return as Dr. Spencer Reid in the upcoming season of Criminal Minds: Evolution. The fan favorite will appear in an episode in the procedural series' third season. In the sequel series, it is often mentioned that Reid is away from the BAU on what they call "a special assignment".



Gubler (pictured) ended up on Criminal Minds shortly after graduating. His character as a criminal profiler quickly became a fan favorite with his analytical skills, his eccentricities - and his ever-changing hair. Together with A.J. Cook, Gubler was the only original regular actor to complete the entire fifteen seasons of Criminal Minds, which ended in 2020, with twelve episodes as director.

Much to fans' disappointment, Gubler was the only Criminal Minds actor from the series' final season on CBS not to return for the 2022 sequel, Criminal Minds: Evolution, on Paramount+.

Both Gubler and showrunner Erica Messer have said in interviews that they tried to make it happen, but it never worked out. Now the schedules appear to have aligned and we hear Gubler will appear in part of an episode in season three. Gubler's storyline is being kept secret.

Gubler is busy with other projects. He is set to play the title role and produce the pilot of the CBS Studios series Einstein (working title), from the Monk team of creator/executive producer Andy Breckman and director/executive producer Randy Zisk.

In it, the brilliant but directionless great-grandson of Albert Einstein (Gubler) spends his days as a comfortably retired professor until his mischief gets him in trouble with the law and he has to help a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.
