Where season one of the reboot might have shown some promise, season two crushes any hope completely. People who read my reviews more often might have noticed I like the generic American crime shows, maybe more so than the average person. I did not like season two of CSI: Vegas, however. These types of crime shows do not thrive on exploring new concepts or being innovative. Rather, they run on having likable characters and interesting cases, preferably both a good case-of-the-week as well as a good red thread case throughout the season. Well, this season has none of that.
A new group of actors has been dug up from the bottom of the Hollywood barrel, where we had barely gotten to know (never mind gotten attached to) last season’s set of new characters. None of the characters are properly introduced or explored, probably because there are so many. Exit Gil and Sara, enter Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger, Intelligence) and Greg Sanders (Eric Szmanda, The Net). Where I really
So what are we left with? Implausible techniques and human rights violations
liked Catherine in the original CSI, her character falls flat here and Marg Helgenberger does not seem to be able to muster up any real energy to really try and act. Maybe she was also affected by the general lack of energy that this season radiates. The storylines also often fall flat, granted some exceptions. They just don’t get a grip on you. Even the red threads (there are two-ish, this time) feel cold, emotionless.
So what are we left with? Exposition of technologically implausible techniques and violations of rights by the police/crime lab, mixed with some generally questionable behavior. Meh.
I am just mostly disappointed after a relatively promising first season that at least had a good storyline and some likable characters. It could have been a good reboot. With that thought, I am going to close off my probably shortest review ever. There is just not much more to say.
Five points for the few decent episodes and Greg Sanders.
