Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket - Season 4

The fourth season of Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket (Darkness: Those Who Kill) follows a familiar pattern but still manages to surprise.
Psychological profiler Louise seems to have found her place as a teacher. Her relationship with police officer Frederik is still somewhat fragile, but love seems to be there. Of course, Louise is soon asked to work on a case involving a serial killer. The murder of a recently released member of a criminal gang initially seems to be focused on the mutual rivalry between two gangs.

When it turns out that the murders have a more complex background, Louise calls in her friend and colleague profiler Gunnar. Gunnar not only helps with the lessons but also gives extensive advice on the case. When Louise and Frederik get closer to the potential perpetrator, fate strikes. For several reasons, it ensures that this case has to be looked at in a completely different way.

Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket has proven to be among the best of Nordic Noir for four seasons now.

The story of the fourth season of Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket is not very innovative on paper. The tension, the surprise at the end and the ingenious story ensure that this is one of the best seasons of the entire series. That is special since the other seasons are already of an excellent level. The twist in the middle of the season is an important reason why I give this high score. Just like the drastic event that makes clear who the perpetrator is.

As always, this series also shows the background of the perpetrator. This makes it clearer to the viewer who the perpetrator is than to the investigators on the case. It does not provide the well-known 'who did it' question, but it does ensure that you as a viewer get more background information about the perpetrator. That story also gets attention. However, this season has a big surprise in store. I can't say what, because otherwise a spoiler is easily made.

When Louise and Frederik get closer to the potential perpetrator, disaster strikes.

Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket has been showing for four seasons that it belongs to the top of Nordic Noir. The Danes still know what it takes to make an exciting crime series. The acting level is, as is so often the case in a Scandinavian series, of a high standard. The personal stories ensure that you can empathize even better with the (main) characters. It helps that Louise does have her problems, for example with intimacy, but that this does not lead to too much trauma. The challenges she encounters are therefore more everyday and recognizable than disturbing because they are too far-fetched.
