Dexter: New Blood - Season 1

In 2013, the Showtime series Dexter came to an end. The ending, according to some, was nothing at all, to say the least. I immediately said: "There will be a sequel to that."
And that sequel came eight years later. With Dexter: New Blood, the series with the nicest, nicest and bloodiest serial killer Dexter Morgan had to end. Did the makers manage to complete the series Dexter or is it back to the writing table. For me, Dexter: New Blood marked the end of an era and in this review, I'd like to take you to Iron Lake without spoilers.

Ten years after Hurricane Laura, we find the presumed dead Miami blood spatter analyst in a small town in upstate New York. He lives there as Jim Lindsay and seems to be able to control his Dark Passenger. He does get some help from a very important person from his past life. Lindsay has an affair with local sheriff Angela Bishop (Julia Jones, Goliath) and works at Fred's Fish & Game.

We’re talking about my son. There’s nothing more personal than that.

When his son Harrison (Jack Alcott, The Good Lord Bird) shows up, it's the starting signal for Dexter/Jim's carefully constructed house of cards to collapse. All the ingredients for a great season are present. Michael C. Hall delivers another excellent Dexter, who has clearly hit a dead end. Because a long-shall-he-live for Dexter would be utterly absurd and not befitting the Bay Harbor Butcher either.

Sorry about the mess. I’m out of practice.

But a long-shall-he-live for Jim Lindsay is certainly possible. That's only possible if Jim can keep control of Dexter's Dark Passenger. Iron Lake works very well as a small town where everyone knows each other and especially interacts with each other. Dexter: New Blood is sometimes a bit predictable here and there. Especially when we start seeing more of Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown, Carnivàle) who goes looking for his son Matt (Steve M. Robertson, Channel Zero).

Is Dexter: New Blood worth seeing? It is, definitely. The series manages to hit the right note again and Hall as Lindsay/Morgan has not lost any of his charm. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is also still the moral compass that tries to keep Dexter on the right path. Both actors know how to get into the skin of their characters in a great way. But Alcott as Harrison also convinces me as the son of Dexter. The resemblance is occasionally frightening.

Will there be a second season? I hope not.

Spoiler! If you haven't watched the series yet, stop reading now!

Dexter Morgan got a dignified and just ending and I'd like to keep it that way. Although there is certainly room for more. But the series is called Dexter and not Harrison. So let everyone in Iron Lake - and Harrison - live happily ever after.

9 points for Dexter and an extra half point for Jim.

Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
