The good serial killer Dexter Morgan is back. In this sequel to New Blood, he heads to New York to support his son. One of our favorite serial killers is back on screen. After Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: New Blood, it's now time for Dexter: Resurrection to justify the return of Dexter Morgan. While Original Sin showed Dexter's first steps as a serial killer, New Blood saw his son emerge. The story of Original Sin is definitely not over yet, but New Blood felt like it was a bit of a dead end. The creators weren't exactly thrilled about seeing Harrison Morgan navigate life as a serial killer alone. The problem, of course, was that Harrison had shot his father.
Fortunately, the television landscape offers many possibilities. In Dexter: Resurrection, Dexter is revealed to have been miraculously saved and, at the outset, to have been in a coma for ten weeks. However, his alias is thrown into disarray by the events of the final episode of New Blood, so that everyone in the remote village in the far north now knows that his real name is Dexter Morgan.
During his coma, numerous ghosts from his past resurface, urging him to fight and help his son cope with a shady passenger. After his father is shot, Harrison moves to New York, where he finds work at a prestigious hotel. There, he quickly runs into trouble when he bludgeons a man who is about to assault a girl. Fortunately, his father has given him proper training, so he knows how to make the body disappear.
Meanwhile, Dexter receives a visit from his former colleague and friend, Batista. He expresses his doubts about various people's suspicions about whether or not Dexter is a serial killer. However, when Dexter discovers a dismembered body in New York, he's almost certain his son is involved. He rushes to New York to support his son.
We also get a glimpse of Charley (Uma Thurman) in the meantime. What her role and that of her boss Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), whom we haven't yet met, will be in this story remains unclear in this first episode. A glimpse of what's to come will be revealed in the second episode. I'm really curious to see how this duo will be integrated into the series in the coming weeks.
The first episode of a series like this could be straight to the point, as it might as well have been called New Blood season 2. Harrison Morgan immediately takes center stage, while Dexter himself has only just woken from his coma. Yet, as the first episode unfolds, you can already sense that Dexter is returning to his old life, especially when he escapes the clinic and heads to New York.
We won't call Dexter: Resurrection innovative, as the creators continue to tap into the same vein that permeated both the original, Original Sin, and New Blood: a serial killer who, through a code, only kills criminals who escape punishment.
