Dexter - Season 1 (DVD)

A lot of people can’t stand the sight of blood, and it would be better if those people don't choose the same profession as Dexter Morgan.

Dexter Morgan was found as a three-year-old boy in a dumpster on a shipyard. For two days, he remained in that dumpster, covered in blood. The police officer who found and later adopted him, promised that nothing and no one would ever hurt him again.
Dexter grows up to be a strange man. He has the uncontrollable need to kill, and this urge needs to be satisfied one day. With the help of his foster dad, he works hard to control his urges. His foster dad, named Harry, teaches him not to kill randomly. If he must, it's better to kill someone who deserves to die. Initially, the urge to kill can be controlled by killing animals, but Harry knows that soon this won’t be enough. Harry helps Dexter to choose his victims carefully, so only the most horrible persons will be picked. Only if Dexter is absolutely sure and the victim will escape the justice system, Dexter will hunt him down.

You wouldn’t expect it from someone who has the need to kill, but he works at a police station, where his sister Debra also works. Debra works in the field and works hard to make a career for herself. Dexter works as a medical examiner, and specializes as a blood spatter analyst. When a crime is committed he investigates the murder scene.
One day he arrives at a crime scene where there is no blood. The body is completely drained of blood and cut in pieces. It turns out that this is the start of a series of murders all through Miami and keeps Dexter in the dark for a long time.

The first season of Dexter is based on the book ‘Darkly Dreaming Dexter’ by Jeff Lindsay. It gives the producers a guide for the show. Both the book and the series show Dexter's point of view. Everything is told by Dexter and this creates a connection between him and the viewer. You can even imagine why he makes the choices he makes and at times you even feel sorry for him. He doesn’t feel anything and doesn't have emotions, and this seems to me quite a lonely existence.

Michael C. Hall, who portrays Dexter in the TV show, has worked on a show with very dark humour before: Six Feet Under. With Dexter, he takes it one step further and shows everyone what a talented actor he is. He is also co-producer of the show. Besides Hall, there are quite a few other talented actors on the show and he has great chemistry with some of them. Especially Jennifer Carpenter (Debra) has some strong scenes with her 'brother'.
Another actor with amazing and exciting scenes is Erik King, who plays the role of Sergeant James Doakes. Doakes is the only one who is suspicious of Dexter and the actor is very convincing.

The success of Dexter was overwhelming. The show received numerous awards and was also very much appreciated by the viewers.

The only extra on the DVD is audio commentary. It is interesting, but most people probably won’t watch the show with commentary.

Dexter is a show with dark humour, but also some sense of morality. It keeps you watching because of the interesting episodes, so it will be hard to stop. The show is original because of its premise. Usually a serial killer is not likeable, but it's different with Dexter. The writers make sure you feel a bond with him and that is a bold choice.
