Dexter - Season 6

Dexter goes religious’ is probably the best way to describe this season. This season’s theme is indeed religion; not only does the serial killer act from a religious perspective, Dexter Morgan himself has to make choices regarding faith. What does he want Harrison to believe? What do people believe from him? But above all: what does he believe?

Like any other next season, season six also holds some new characters in store. Lumen, Jordan Chase, and the rest of the gang disappeared which, obviously, makes room for a couple of new ones. The series doesn’t disappoint because these characters are complex, interesting, and incredibly well-cast as well.

Just like in the previous seasons of 'Dexter', this one revolves around a new opponent for Miami Metro Homicide. This time, it’s a fervent Christian named Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks, ‘The Good Guys’) with Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos, ‘Miami Vice’) by his side. Travis and Professor Gellar believe that they are the two Witnesses that observe the Apocalypse, but they’d have to start it before being able to witness. Travis does the killing and in doing so gains the nickname ‘Doomsday Killer’ (DDK); he believes that they can start the Apocalypse by re-enacting the tableaus described in the biblical Book of Revelation with their murders. In my opinion, the psyche and the chemistry between Travis and Gellar is incredibly gripping, and the actors portray this magnificently. Hanks and Olmos are able to convey such strength in how deep the characters themselves believe they are doing the right thing in trying to rid the world of the infidels, and in doing so, make Travis and Gellar’s way of thinking credible, even to us as viewers.

Naturally, Travis and Professor Gellar aren’t the only new characters in season six. Another new and increasingly important character in Dexter’s life is Brother Sam (Mos Def), and ex-convict who owns a car garage with which he helps other ex-convicts to get on the right track again. Brother Sam finds a lot of support in his faith, and helps Dexter in making his choices with insights from his take on Christianity. I think it’s fascinating to see an ex-felon this calm, and for him to have such influence on Dexter’s choices, while Dexter’s first approach to Brother Sam had a completely different motive from what he gets out of their friendship.

Knowing Dexter, there is a lot more intrigue than just this. Dexter himself gets into some new relationships, and the relationships he already has with his family, colleagues, and friends change dramatically. Debra, too, finds out a great deal more about herself with the help of a psychiatrist. Many things change for her: her relationships, career, but especially how she stands in relation to Dexter. It’s excellent material to build up to a killer of a cliff-hanger in the season finale.

Lastly, I’d like to touch upon how incredibly artistic this season is. Although the tableaus are pretty morbid and bloody, they’re pieces of art as they are. I think they’re beautiful and clever images of the descriptions in the original biblical book. The cinematography and entire mechanics of the tableaus, in combination with the thought and workmanship behind the creations, agree with the plotline perfectly.

Season six is undoubtedly one of my favourite seasons of 'Dexter'. This is how a series’ seasons are supposed to be: an ingenious scarlet thread woven through the entire series, with an exceptional and gripping plot per season. And that’s what 'Dexter' as a series is good at. I’m awarding season six with a perfect 10 out of 10.
