Doctor Odyssey - First episode
Doctors at sea. Does Doctor Odyssey bring anything new this season? I really enjoy a good procedural series. Whether it is a hospital series, or about police or firefighters. Every now and then that is exactly the entertainment I need in between. When I saw that Ryan Murphy would come up with a new similar series after 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, I was immediately enthusiastic. But does Doctor Oddysey have the same flair as the previously mentioned series?
The first episode of this new series was 'ok'. The cases that the doctors encountered were interesting enough, but also very incomplete. The series' pace is very fast and a lot happens in the first episode. This made it difficult for me to get a grip on what I was watching. It would have been better if they had taken a little longer to see the patients and had fewer of them in the delivery. Then we could have dwelled on that a little longer. The same applies to the three main characters, we could have paid more attention to that.
A series like Doctor Oddysey needs two things to be fun to watch: interesting patients and fun main characters. As I wrote before, the patients were fine for a first episode. The main characters, on the other hand, have not really shown their best side yet. Actually, they're all not really nice people. They just met each other and are already sticking knives in each other's backs. In my opinion, this is not necessary to make the series interesting. I especially don't like the new doctor Max. Joshua Jackson doesn't have the flair to carry this series. That's a shame. Especially since the characters are really the best part of 9-1-1, a similar series from the same creator.
I'll give Doctor Odyssey a chance for a few more episodes. But I have to say that I don't know yet if I will continue watching this series. We'll see.
The first episode gets a 6.0.
Doctor Odyssey follows three doctors on a luxury cruise ship where they are responsible for the medical safety of all passengers. The two permanent nurses, Avery Morgan (Philippa Soo, Dopesick) and Tristan Silva (Sean Teale, Skins), are surprised when they get a new boss: Doctor Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson, Fatal Attraction). A somewhat arrogant man who thinks he knows better, even though the other two have been working on the cruiser for years. This immediately creates tensions. The main characters, on the other hand, have not really shown their best side yet. Actually, they're all not really nice people.
