Doctor Who - Season 4

‘Hey, haven’t we seen her before?’ That’s what my sister asked me when we saw the second episode of ‘Doctor Who’ season 4. And indeed, we had seen Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) before, in the Christmas special of the third season. The Runaway Bride is back, this time single and very willing to join the Doctor on his travels.

In the fourth season as well as in the previous two, we have David Tennant (‘Broadchurch’) as the Tenth Doctor. For the last time. What I like so much is that the chemistry between him and all different companions is distinct, every single time. Where Rose and Martha were quite polite, Donna is as fiery as her red hair (ha-ha, funny). She does what she wants and doesn’t mind protesting when something happens that she doesn’t agree with. At the start of the season, you can see that the Doctor has some trouble adjusting, but the further we get into the season, they start working together better and better. In ‘The Planet of the Ood’, they’re even named in one breath as ‘the Doctor, Donna, Friends.’ It’s almost a literal symbiotic relationship towards the end of the season, when the heartbreaking moment of the last episode, ‘Journey’s End’, arrives. Many fans’ hearts were broken during this episode, because it is indeed rather sad. The end that signals Donna’s travels through time and space has come. It isn’t really a happy ending, but I think they’ve found a good way to end her ‘song’, to put it in words of the Ood.

Honestly, I don’t really have favourite episodes in this season. I quite liked ‘The Unicorn and the Wasp’, because it goes back in time and explains a certain phenomenon (in this case, the disappearance of Agatha Christie), because the Doctor mingled in the situation. There also is a “nice” surprise for the lovers of ‘Old Who’: the return of an old enemy. I myself have never seen the old series, but the people who I’ve heard talking about it thought it was pretty cool.

And of course there are new minor characters, amongst which River Song. I’ll say it in advance: River isn’t my favourite character ever, but she is an ingenious invention. Why, that becomes clear in season six (I won’t tell, because, to quote River: ‘Spoilers...’). Alex Kingston definitely is a good actress for this role. She keeps a good balance between serious, independent, funny, and flirtatious. Interestingly, Kingston was the only one who knew River’s story line, whereas it was still a secret for the rest of the cast. One character who really aroused my sympathy this season is Donna’s grandfather, Wilfred Mott (Brian Cribbins). He stars in the Christmas special of this season (with Kylie Minogue and a crashing Titanic. Yes, seriously) and seems to recognise the Doctor from the happenings we saw in ‘The Runaway Bride’ (season 3). Although it seems like his role is a minor one, it proves to be essential – and heartbreaking, too – towards the end of the season.

I’m awarding ‘Doctor Who’ season four with a nice, round 8. But before I sign off, there’s a final thing that you have to be aware of in this season: do watch the Christmas special between seasons four and five, ‘The End of Time’. It’s not on the DVDs of season four or five, and neither in the lists of many websites online. It is, however, really important that you watch it: in this two-part special the regeneration of the Tenth to the Eleventh Doctor takes place (and, of course, the story is amazing, once again).
