“Streaming exclusively on Disney, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown,” the official synopsis reads. “She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”
Directed by Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie, Echo sees Alaqua Cox reprise her role as Maya Lopez following her debut in Marvel's Hawkeye in 2021. In addition to D'Onofrio and Cox, it also stars Chaske Spencer (The English), Tantoo Cardinal (Three Pines), Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds), Cody Lightning and Graham Greene (Longmire) join the series.
Echo was created by Marion Dayre, who is also the series' lead writer with Amy Rardin. Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Dayre, Jason Gavin, Rardin, Freeland, Christian King and Jennifer Booth.
While Netflix has debuted dark series produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios, such as Marvel's Daredevil and Luke Cage, Echo will be the first official Marvel Studios dark series that fits directly into the MCU and is created specifically for Disney+.
All five episodes of Echo, the first MCU series under the Marvel Spotlight banner, will release on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 on Disney+ and Hulu.
