In season two, the series once again followed Evan Marquez (Alvarez), who was trying to navigate the political minefield known as the American high school. By his side — albeit not always voluntarily — were his best friend Gwen (Koenig), the gym teacher Markie (Patton), the unpredictable guidance counselor Rick (Christopher), and the perpetually anxious principal Grant Moretti (Colantoni).
English Teacher was produced by FX Productions and had a team of executive producers including Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, and Jake Bender & Zach Dunn. FX took its time renewing the series: the confirmation of a second season came four months after the finale of the first season.
Despite the positive reception, English Teacher never managed to attract a large audience. However, the reviews were glowing: season 1 scored 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and season two even achieved 100%. The series was also nominated for several awards, including the Critics Choice Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the Writers Guild of America Awards (WGA).
