Everything Sucks! - First episode
Everything Sucks! is a typical nineties show, portraying the life of teenagers at that time. The two main characters are two teens, who are part of an A/V club and they both like to create movies. It takes place in a small town called Boring in Oregon. Even though Luke O'Neil (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) and Kate Messner (Peyton Kennedy) may take that name quite literally, they actually experience way more than the average teenager. Kate is a person whom you'd avoid in high school, as she is the principal's daughter. Luke is, however, willing to take the risk and asks her out.
The first episode immediately manages to create that perfect nineties vibe, including the taboo topics of the time such as sexuality. This specific episode takes you back into the past, a time that most of us may still remember vividly. A time when the TV still had to be wheeled into the classroom in order to watch a movie, a time when the A/V club still had to use huge cameras and other heavy and expensive equipment. Everything Sucks! really takes you back to the time when not everything was widely accepted, such as being gay.
After so many ordinary high school dramas, this show surprisingly manages to stand out and be different. The creators manage to show whatever was going on in the mind of the average teen at that time. Especially Kate, who is slightly rebellious and not so much of a girly girl and is still searching for her identity. A girl that joins the A/V club is unusual on its own, but when she's also the daughter of the principal we can only wonder what this will mean for the rest of the show.
