Fair Trade - Season 2

Second season of the hard-hitting action series Fair Trade from the makers of Matroesjka's, in which corrupt cops rule the roost and find themselves sinking deeper and deeper into the crime swamp.
After her colleague Walter (Kevin Janssens) was shot to the afterlife at the end of the first season, Robin (Ella-June Henrard) is transferred to the drugs section. There she is again confronted by her colleague Frank Slaets (Axel Daeseleire). We also meet Dimitri Kremer (Peter Thyssen, De Zonen Van Van As) who also works in the drugs section.

We know from the first season that Slaets and Robin both have ties to the drug world and work as informants for another drug cartel. But Dimitri is also not pure to the degree. It soon turns out that he has a link with the Russian mafia, who also want a share of the drug cake. The series quickly becomes a tangle of violence and betrayal, in which both the police and the criminals get in each other's way and try to outdo each other. It is therefore not surprising that there are casualties on both sides.

In the first season, Peter Van Den Begin in particular went with the acting feathers for his portrayal of mafia boss Paternoster. In the second season, he has to share that honor with Peter Thyssen, who knows how to convey his role as a jack of all trades for the Russian mafia with verve. The rest of the actors also do their job very well.

As we are used to with director Mark Punt, there are lots of bombs and bullets flying around. None of the characters is safe, because both the criminals and the police can die at any second. In addition, Punt also has a subscription to a good portion of nudity and that is also not missing in this second season of Fair Trade.

We can conclude that a second season was more than justified to close the story from the first season. Still, I found the second season less strong than the first, because the emphasis was slightly more on the violence and the development of the characters was pushed more into the background. Whether there will be a third season remains to be seen, because at the end of this second season, many chapters are finally closed and others leave a tiny opening to perhaps do something with the Fair Trade theme in the future.

Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
