Fate: The Winx Saga - Season 2

Bloom and her friends face new challenges as Alfea has been taken over by the mysterious Rosalind. What is she up to and what does this have to do with Bloom's past?

More than a year and a half after the first season, the long-awaited second season of Fate: The Winx Saga was released. This fantasy series from Netflix shows the adult, more modern version of the Winx Club fairies that have existed in cartoon form since 2004. The first season ended with a cliffhanger and this new series picks up some time after those events. Alfea has changed a lot since Rosalind (Miranda Richardson, Girlfriends) took over and not many people are happy about this. This complete season, therefore, revolves around Rosalind's plan and its consequences on the Other World.

Students disappear and no one seems to be able to get a grip on the outside threats.

The tone is immediately set when a (suicide) murder takes place during the first minutes. Students disappear and no one seems to be able to get a grip on the outside threats. Bloom (Abigail Cowen, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) doesn't trust Rosalind at all and thinks she had something to do with it. Together with her friends, the so-called Winx team, she tries to find out which secrets are hidden in Alfea and how they can get everything back to the way it was.

During the second episode, Flora (Paulina Chavez, The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), the niece of Terra (Eliot Salt, Intelligence), makes her appearance. She doesn't seem to have much trouble finding her place within the group of friends. This season there is a lot of attention on mutual relationships, both in love and friendship. Bloom's relationship with Sky (Danny Griffin) is now serious and the other characters also experience the necessary romances. For example, Aisha (Precious Mustapha) meets specialist Gray (Brandon Grace) and Riven (Freddie Thorp) is still involved in a threesome with Beatrix (Sadie Soverall) and Dane (Theo Graham, Hollyoaks). In addition, there is another character coming out this season.

Also this time the episodes are on average 50 minutes each. The entire season consists of seven episodes, one more than the first season. I think it's a pity that this was chosen again because this again leaves too little time for sufficient depth of the characters. The long break between the first and second seasons also does not help the story. This is standard with Netflix but causes the momentum to be lost. Especially with a series with short seasons, this is not good for the viewer. Fortunately, the special effects and acting are of a good level.

When it turns out that the blood witches are back, the whole school is on edge. Andreas (Ken Duken, Professionals) uses his hard teaching style to prepare the specialists for the approaching war, while Rosalind forces the fairies to use their powers against it. The subject of season two is strong and because every episode ends with a cliffhanger, you tend to binge through it. In addition to all the action and drama, there is also room for some humor this time. The soundtrack with music by artists such as Taylor Swift also fits the atmosphere well.

Unfortunately, it was recently announced that there will not be a third season.

The role of Rosalind is played by a new actress this season. Although this is hardly noticeable because the actresses look so much alike, the new Rosalind is a bit softer at first glance. Although Sam (Jacob Dudman, The Stranger) is still played by the same actor, this character has had a complete makeover on the inside. His actions and feelings are at odds with those of last season and a good explanation is not actually given for this. This season there are more hints to the cartoons. For example, the girls regularly wear crop tops and a revelation about Beatrix's past also seems to be a nod to the animated series.

Although I liked the first season better, I'm definitely excited for season two. Unfortunately, it was recently announced that there will not be a third season. This is much to the disappointment of the loyal fans. The abrupt ending reminds me a lot of Witches of East End, another good magical series that was canceled after two seasons with a major cliffhanger. I agree that things could be better. The seasons were too short, situations were unclearly explained and the depth was missing here and there. The likely cause of the cancelation (and short seasons) will likely be a combination of the ratings and high costs associated with a production with so many special effects. Still, I would have liked to see many more stories from the Winx fairies, or at least a real closure without so many open endings.
