Written by Wolf, FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman and former CIA officer David Chasteen, the proposed spinoff will be introduced in an upcoming episode of FBI this season, which will serve as a backdoor pilot.
In it, a dedicated, hard-nosed FBI agent and a smart CIA agent are part of a new task force tasked with solving and preventing domestic terrorism in and around New York City.
Three characters, including the lead FBI and CIA agents, will appear in the spinoff episode, set to air this spring, and would become series regulars if the project moves forward. Casting for the roles is currently underway.
Like the rest of the FBI franchise, the series would be produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and CBS Studios. FBI: CIA is set in the same universe as FBI and FBI: Most Wanted, allowing for crossovers, something Wolf has mastered in his series. Wolf Entertainment’s Law & Order franchise is also set in the Big Apple, but the NBCUniversal home base would make crossovers difficult.
It’s unclear what a series pickup for FBI: CIA would mean for FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, which are set in Europe. Last spring, CBS renewed FBI for three seasons, through 2026-27, while FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International were both single-season, ending in May.
Primetime is three hours long, so it’s yet to be determined whether CBS can pick up four FBI series next season; if it does, at least one would have to air on a different night. FBI, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International currently air as FBI Night, and all three series have respectable viewership, led by the flagship FBI, one of CBS’s most-watched shows.
CBS has focused on franchises for next season, with potential spinoffs of the drama The Equalizer (also from Uni TV and CBS Studios) and the comedy The Neighborhood . The network already has a Fire Country spinoff, Sheriff Country , scheduled to debut in 2025-26.
