According to sources, that’s no longer happening. But the new spinoff could still join the mothership on the 2025-2026 schedule with a straight-to-series order. Casting negotiations for the male lead are ongoing. So far, FBI is the only series from the procedural franchise scheduled for next season after securing a three-year renewal last spring. Both spinoffs, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, are set to conclude in May.
Written by Dick Wolf, FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman and former CIA officer David Chasteen, the proposed spinoff centers on a dedicated, stern FBI agent and a streetwise CIA agent who are part of a new, secretive task force tasked with solving and preventing domestic terrorism in and around New York City.
Originally, three characters — including an FBI agent and a CIA agent — were to be introduced in a planned FBI spinoff episode. According to reports, this was originally scheduled for episode 19. Because casting went through but no one was confirmed, it was pushed back to episode 20 and then to 21.
Ultimately, it was decided not to make a planned FBI spinoff episode, which is wrapping production on its seventh season soon. Actors who had been retained for the third role in the potential Backdoor pilot have been released, sources said.
Representatives for CBS and FBI producers Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television declined to comment.
The FBI CIA spinoff is being produced by Wolf, Hudgins, Perlman, Chasteen and Peter Jankowski of Wolf Entertainment. Like the rest of the FBI franchise, the series is said to be produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and CBS Studios.
