Fool Me Once - First episode

This adaptation of Harlan Corben's book Fool Me Once will make you question everything. A real whodunnit from the modern school that shows that the past can never be completely buried.
The first episode of this series seems to introduce a great example of gaslighting. It's so easy to make someone doubt their mental health. Or has Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan, Brassic) really gone off track?

When the husband of a young woman and mother is murdered in front of her eyes, it is not surprising that she is devastated. That experience comes on top of traumatic experiences from her past in the military. And apparently something happened in 1996 that still affects people's lives so many years later. However, it is not clear whether Maya had anything to do with that.

Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar, Sweet Tooth) is the detective investigating her husband's murder. Adeel once again plays a friendly little man. His character is modest and introverted. Someone for whom life seems like an arduous journey. He seems born for that role.
During his investigation, information surfaces that indicates that Maya is mentally unstable. That makes it difficult for him to maintain a neutral gaze.

In Fool Me Once, Sami also seems to have some problems. Of course this affects his work, but certainly also his private life. Police officers are only human after all.

Maya's world is dominated by her in-laws. Joe Burkett, her husband (Richard Armitage, The Stranger (2020)) is the son of the wealthy Judith Burkett (Joanna Lumley, Motherland). She heads the family that runs a profitable pharmaceutical company.

The relationship between Maya and Judith is quite difficult. Judith is controlling and manipulative. She seems to have difficulty with the difference in the social status of her daughter-in-law and her own wealthy family. It is once again 'old money' against the mob. Joanna subtly plays a tough woman. That conflicts, because Maya is also not a woman who can be pushed around.

This seems typical of a series that will combine different storylines. It's about people who are forced by mysterious circumstances to get to know each other better. They may also learn something about themselves along the way.

Especially the scenes with Maya and her mother-in-law, and the one with Sami Kierce, make this a potential binge series.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

I can totally agree with your review, Hugo. I can't wait for the second season, which will be released on November 15th.
