Frontier - First Episode

The combined forces of Netflix, Discovery Canada and Jason Momoa made sure I didn't need to think twice. I had to watch this series, sooner rather than later. Of course I'm talking about the new historical drama series Frontier.

North America, 18th century. Frontier tells about the fur trade in the North American wilderness which often led to violent conflicts. Wealth, power, cutting out the competition, coming out on top: the conflict over fur is incredibly harsh and chaotic.

The first episode focusses mainly on the introduction of the different characters, the different perspectives on the story. For example, the wild fur trader Declan Harp (Jason Momoa, Game of Thrones) who is known for being ruthless and the young Irishman Michael Smyth (Landon Liboiron, Hemlock Grove) who reaches the New World by ship and is ordered to become involved in the fur trade and to look for Harp.

This first episode is first-class, visually, exciting and filled with fast action. The introduction of a number of characters lay the groundwork for the different story lines. This episode almost feels like a movie and evokes the same atmosphere as in Game of Thrones and DiCaprio's The Revenant. So it's no surprise to see Jason Momoa here, who is mainly known from Game of Thrones and played the memorable part of Dothraki warrior Khal Drogo. Besides, the original topic appeals to me personally. It's creative, and new. A topic I would definitely like to learn more about.

Introducing so many characters can be seen as a disadvantage. From the start, the story enfolds quite fast. It's a bit of a struggle to keep up and to get into the episode.
Combined with the switching of settings, for example the North American wilderness and London, the viewer is forced to pay attention to keep up with all the events and actions. But of course this is not unusual when watching a pilot episode: new settings, new stories, new faces... a new beginning. No wonder it takes some time to get into a new series.

It's always difficult to form an opinion based on a pilot. It's a struggle to get through the beginning of Frontier, but after about fifteen minutes you're in the episode and you're sucked into the story. Particularly because of the interesting topic and because the show feels like a movie.

I'm a hundred percent convinced after the first episode and I'm looking forward to the rest of the first season.
From this month the first season can be seen on Netflix and a second season has already been confirmed.
