Futurama - Season 8

Unfortunately, Futurama does not reach the level of the previous seasons, but it is certainly worth watching because of the many fun references to pop culture, our society and the humor.
Futurama is one of the most beloved animated series of all time, known for its clever humor, original stories and colorful characters. After a long hiatus, the series returned for an eighth season, which can be seen exclusively on Hulu. But is this season as good as the last, or is it a disappointment for the fans? In this review, I will discuss the highs and lows of the season, and give my overall impressions.

The season consists of ten episodes, each lasting approximately 22 minutes. The season begins with a direct sequel to the final episode of season seven, in which the universe is frozen in time. Professor Farnsworth emerges from a time magnifying glass and presses the time button to restart the universe to the moment when time stood still. After discovering that everyone has been frozen for ten years, Fry realizes that he has accomplished nothing in his entire life. Deciding to find a purpose in life, he chooses to watch every TV series ever made, leading to the revival of All My Circuits and the resurrection of Calculon.

This episode sets the tone for the season, which makes many references to 21st century pop culture, technology and society. In the following episodes, we will see how the crew deals with Bitcoin, vaccines, cancel culture, streaming services and simulations. Some of these themes are very current and relevant and offer an interesting view of the future. Others, however, are a bit dated or clichéd and feel like an attempt to keep up with trends. The season sometimes lacks the originality and creativity that characterized the series in the past.

That's not to say the season doesn't have fun and exciting moments. There are still plenty of jokes that work well and the characters remain likeable and relatable. The animation is also of high quality and the voice actors do an excellent job. There are also some episodes that really stand out, like the third episode, where the crew goes to Doge City, a city that is forced to live as if it were the Wild West due to crypto mining that consumes all the electricity. This episode is a hilarious parody of the Western genre and contains many references to Dogecoin, a popular cryptocurrency based on an internet meme. The episode also pays tribute to the late writer Ken Keeler, who wrote the script under the pseudonym Nona di Spargement.

Overall, the eighth season of Futurama is an entertaining and watchable season that is sure to please fans of the series. However, the season is not without flaws and does not reach the level of the previous seasons. The season sometimes lacks the freshness and originality that made the series so unique and relies too much on current events and trends. The season is also a bit short, and leaves some storylines and characters underexposed. So the season is not perfect, but it is worth watching.
