Game of Thrones - complete series

Keep in mind, this review contains spoilers of Game of Thrones.

In 1996, George R.R. Martin wrote the first book in the Game of Thrones series. Fans had to wait for quite some time before it was adapted into a television series. In 2011, it eventually aired on HBO (Home Box Office). The creators haven't remained entirely faithful to the books. At a certain point, the story in the series surpassed the story in the books. Nonetheless, George R.R. Martin was involved with the creation and storylines of all seasons.

Game of Thrones takes place in a mythical world consisting of three continents: Westeros, Essos and Sothoryos. This series focuses on the first two. Westeros is the home of the seven kingdoms. At least, it used to while under the regime of 'The Mad King'. Now, these so-called seven kingdoms are no longer united and the continent is instead divided into nine regions. Each region has its own powerful ruling house. After The Mad King's regime, the time of peace is done for and a war between the many houses begins. They all have one goal, which is to claim the Iron Throne. The series begins in the period shortly after this, which is at a time when there is some kind of armed peace.

Now, I can hear you thinking: "Ok, this sounds like your average fantasy series". Spoiler: Couldn't be further from the truth. Starting from the very first moment I heard about this series, I was hooked. Each week, I couldn't wait for the next episode. And even though the intro is ridiculously long, I always watched it. Just to get into the Game of Thrones vibe. Why was I hooked? Well, this series can't be compared to any other. Favourite characters aren't spared and could be, for example, executed. Blood flows freely, there are numerous fights of epic proportions, incest is pretty normal, loads of sex scenes and a lot of lies and betrayal.

When the eighth and final season was about to begin, I decided to rewatch the first seven seasons. And only then was I able to fully understand the story. The puzzle pieces seemed to fit better. That may be the downside to Game of Thrones. There are so many characters, who all have a family - or not -, a history and their own enemies and friends. When you finally seem to understand it all, the character dies!

On the long road to conquering the Iron Throne, entire families are wiped from the face of this fictional world. This often happens in famous battles such as 'The Battle of the Bastards' or when we were able to see the impact of Wildfire at the hands of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in the second season. There are also scenes that shocked the world. That particular decapitation or 'The Red Wedding' come to mind. Remember that one scene where you finally find out why Hodor is only able to say his own name? That really choked me up.

Game of Thrones also has its so-called bad guys. Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), the insufferable Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and the big bad himself, the Night King (Vladimir Furdik). Unfortunately, some of these characters were killed off way too easily, even when you hoped they would. I'm talking about the death of the Night King. Something that could've been played out so much better.

The first season had the lowest ratings as it was too slow and 'nothing' happened. In comparison, the seventh season seemed to go a bit too fast. Once in season eight, we were in top gear. For me personally, those seasons went way too fast in terms of storyline. They should've slowed down. I found that very unfortunate because if they had continued at the same pace as seasons one to six, it could have easily been made into ten seasons.

Game of Thrones was a long roller coaster ride and I'm glad I was able to experience it. But everything ends and this also applies to Game of Thrones. Thanks for these great years! Hopefully, some unanswered questions will be answered at some point. We'll have to wait before we've uncovered all of Westeros. The story surrounding Game of Thrones isn't entirely over. In the future, we'll get to watch a prequel which is called House of the Dragon. Some great names have already been added to the cast, such as Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke. It isn't known when this new series is set to release, but it will likely be worth the wait.
