Game of Thrones - Season 1

Game of Thrones” is a series which is based on the fantasy novels “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin.

As a good fantasy novel is supposed to do, it deals with kingdoms, honour, loyalty, power, conspiracies, bloody battles, witches and dragons and dragon eggs. Good against evil. This all takes place in a medieval setting on the continent of Westeros ruled by king Robert Baratheon. In these surroundings, people move around on horseback and fight with swords.

When Robert dies, a bloody battle for the throne arises. This does not only involve noble families from the seven kingdoms of Westeros. South in Pentos, across the Narrow Sea, a conspiracy has also formed. As if this isn't bad enough, an old evil has resurrected behind the Wall, which should protect the northern countries. I have watched the series with great pleasure. The story is not only really exciting (could hardly wait for the next episode), but it is also beautiful to watch: a lot of attention has been paid to scenery and costumes: beautiful robes, tough armour.

The characters are fascinating too: the cruel, selfish rotter Joffrey Baratheon is a good example. Furthermore, you can get annoyed by the ignorance of the daughter of Ned Stark when she doesn't see what a creep Joffrey is. But simultaneously, her adolescent behaviour is recognisable when she talks to her governess Septa. The scheming of the councillors, each with their own motives and in addition to that, the honour of Eddard Stark which has such a deep impact that he is forced to take a decision which makes you want to scream: “No no!! Don't!”

The scenery includes beautiful places and interesting views: In Pentos, you feel like you're in old Greece, warm and Mediterranean. The ice Wall is very impressive: it makes you wonder whether the men are properly dressed for the cold, which you can almost feel yourself. And then there's the Eyrie: when you're afraid of heights, you'll feel butterflies in your stomach. Nicely mapped out, this stronghold at great height.

The cast contains many familiar faces: they didn't choose just anyone for this series, and that can be seen in the episodes. Well portrayed, and the characters are justified and continue to be fascinating.

However, I did think the Dothraki were kind of contrived: these nomads seem to be from various races which I don't think is suitable for such a barbarian community with seemingly strict regulations. They are portrayed as some kind of Indians we know from old Westerns.

We'll absolutely see more of Daenerys and House Targaryen in the next seasons, just as we'll see more of the Lannisters, the Starks and the evil beyond the Wall. It's a must-see for everyone who likes fantasy, and tension, adventure, action and romance.
