Ghosts (2019) - Season 5

The fifth season of Ghosts (2019) ends on a high note. Yet the door is left wide open for more.
We can visit Button House for one last time, because after five seasons the comedy series Ghosts (2019) is coming to an end. The idea of this series is still the same after all these years. Alison (Charlotte Ritchie, Fresh Meat) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Stath Lets Flats) live in an old mansion teeming with the ghosts of people who died in the house. While the young couple tries to make money by renting out their house as a place to stay, the ghosts meddle in the affairs of the living.

The idea has been the same for five seasons, but the makers still manage to give each season a slightly different interpretation. This season, Alison and Mike appear to be permanently bankrupt after a fire, and they try to sell their garden to someone who wants to turn it into a golf course. And they desperately need that money because of an unexpected change in their family situation. The ghosts are involved in, among other things, April Fool's jokes, line dancing, television quizzes and thinking about death.

Even after five seasons, Ghosts (2019) is still a lot of fun and the actors and writers know how to present their characters and storylines in an inventive way. In the past, it was mainly clashes between colorful and diverse caricatures that made the series fun. This is still the case, and the jokes that result from this are very successful. For example, the beheaded nobleman Humphrey (Laurence Rickard, Horrible Histories) will have a bigger role this season. His interactions with Alison, primal human Robin (also played by Laurence Rickard) and noblewoman Kitty (Lolly Adefope, Miracle Workers), among others, provide great hilarity.

Ghosts addresses sensitive themes in a heart-warming way

But in this season, a central theme is also introduced during each episode, and each character deals with this in their own way. This is also a really good way to put each character in the spotlight. Some episodes provide unpretentious entertainment, for example when it comes to April Fool's jokes. But in some episodes, they go a little deeper when more abstract and serious matters are discussed, such as the feeling of home, goodbye or mortality.

Last season it became clear that life after death in this series is not forever, and they continue to elaborate on this in this season. Once again we see the ghosts pondering their own mortality as they look back on their own lives and deaths. This is quite a tough theme, but it is never really made too heavy. Fortunately, the necessary jokes are still thrown in and this produces beautiful and heart-warming television.

Despite the ending, there remains room for more Ghosts

But although life after death can sometimes last centuries or thousands of years, the makers have still chosen to say goodbye to the series after five seasons. While the ending comes at a natural point in the series, it doesn't quite feel like a final ending. It feels like there could easily be another five seasons. That may feel a bit unsatisfactory, but in this way they leave the door open for a possible sequel. The BBC has announced that another Christmas special is on the way, and let's hope Ghosts (2019) returns more often.
