Good Omens - Season 2

Sheen and Tennant are back! If that does not hype you up enough for season 2, skip it, because this season revolves around the relationship between our demon and angel.
Good Omens Season 1 was based on the book by Pratchett and Gaiman and provided a very well-executed serialization of it. Season 2, on the other hand, does not have much source material. Gaiman reportedly used ideas he and Pratchett had collected before the latter’s death to make this season, but it is clear that it is not as well-rounded as the first season was. Nonetheless, this season is quite good, particularly due to the stellar performances from Tennant and Sheen, who seem to be as well-tuned to each other as always.

The story starts when Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm, Mad Man) shows up at Aziraphale’s bookshop with just a box. And with ‘just a box’, I mean literally ‘just a box’, as he is naked and has lost his memory. The main storyline in the remainder of the season consists of Crowley and Aziraphale trying to figure out why Gabriel is here while trying to hide him from both heaven and hell.

While this might be the main plot set in ‘the present day’, a major part of the season is actually dedicated to the history between Crowley and Aziraphale. The second, third and fourth episodes are mostly so-called ‘minisodes’, each time covering a small part of the history between Crowley and Aziraphale. The common theme is moral grayness, where Crowley shows his better side and Aziraphale learns that ‘being good’ sometimes involves ‘being bad’. We see the two grow closer and their willingness to help each other and trust each other grow.

This season is all about the development of a relationship between two… friends?

Everything, just like in the first season, comes together in the final episode and things start making ‘sense’ (or well, as much sense as we can expect from a series like this). However, we do not get true closure like in the first season. Instead, it forms a clear setup for a third season, and is in this way a beginning rather than an end. Be warned, however, as the ‘ending’ is surprisingly emotional for a comedic show such as this one. It left me wanting more, hoping that we get a season three. The series is, in its many details, as ridiculous(ly funny) as season 1 was.

Concluding, I would most certainly recommend you to watch this season but do not expect it to be as polished as the first season. This season is all about the development of a relationship between two… friends? Nothing more, but also most certainly not less.

PS. Can you find all the Doctor Who references?
