Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead return to expand The Endless with a television adaptation in the works.

The Endless tells the story of two brothers dealing with tension in their relationship. They visit a supposed cult they once belonged to and along the way discover that the situation is even stranger than they realize. The film received highly positive reviews from critics and raised the profile of the directors, who have since directed episodes of Marvel's Moon Knight and will continue to direct the upcoming second season of Marvel's Loki.

In an interview on the Script Apart podcast, Moorhead and Benson (pictured) revealed they were working on a series adaptation of The Endless.

The duo revealed that they are currently writing the project, which would also star them. It would be set in the same Endless universe as the 2017 movie. Benson offered some details, which are included in the quote below via Collider:

“The main characters are Aaron and Justin again. But that’s about as far as we can probably go right now. What I can say, I am stunned by how good it is. It is Justin’s best work by far, and it’s just so, so incredibly fun to work on. I wish I could get into the plot more – I don’t know if we’re ready or not. But it very easily could be the thing that, if we die right after it’s finished, it’s like, ‘Ok! Cool, I did it. That was the one to go out on.’ It’s very cool.”

Part of the trick in The Endless is that it plays like a mystery. Returning to an old cult for two brothers with a complicated history is bad enough. But almost from the moment they arrive, it's clear that there's something especially off about the place. Towards the conclusion, it's revealed that the cult lives in a time loop purgatory, where people get stuck there at different intervals. Although they are aware of their doomed reality, and they're aware that they're stuck in a loop, they can't leave. Even worse, they have to repeat how they died.

In one of the film's most brutal scenes, it's shown how one character's loop lasts mere seconds, so that character's entire existence is just to die brutally. Unlike other people in the community, he has no reprieve. A television show could expand on these little details, but The Endless' interesting aspect is that it tells a relatable story compactly and carefully about two brothers' bond after a creepy, life-changing experience.

For now, The Endless directors remain quiet about the tv show's premise and possible plot, even expressing their indecision about whether it is ready to be worked on. Despite some uncertainty, the sci-fi film itself is a continuation of a 2012 horror movie, titled Resolution, which was different in tone, so Benson and Moorhead have expanded on their worlds quite successfully before.
