The dark satirical anthology series, mostly set in near-future dystopias, has gone through many iterations since launching on Britain's Channel 4 in 2011 and received a budget boost when it was picked up by Netflix in 2016. The sixth season was available to stream four years after season five.
The sixth season rose to the top of Netflix's Streaming Top 10 in 92 countries when it started streaming in June and spent four weeks in Netflix's global top 10 of English-language television.
The season consisted of five episodes with cast members such as Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy, Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett and Paapa Essiedu. The most talked about episode, Joan is Awful, followed a woman as her life was adapted into a streaming television series, tackling AI-related themes that were seen as progressive during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA negotiations.
Series creator Brooker is responsible for the showrunners and production, along with Annabel Jones, whose pair founded the Netflix-backed Black Mirror indie Broke And Bones several years ago. Jessica Rhoades also produces.
