British broadcaster ITV has given the green light to The Dark, an adaptation of GR Halliday's novel From the Shadows.

The Dark follows Scottish detective Monica Kennedy. When the body of a young man is found ominously abandoned in the idyllic Scottish countryside, Kennedy fears it is just the beginning of a terrifying series of murders that will engulf a rural community. As panic grows, suspicions and secrets are exposed, and the town realizes a serial killer is lurking among them.

GR Halliday’s sourcebook From the Shadows is the first in a trilogy (with Dark Waters and Under the Marsh), leaving room for possible follow-up seasons. The series is being written by Matt Hartley, known for EastEnders and Hollyoaks.

The series is being produced by Poison Pen, the independent production company of Ben Stephenson (pictured). It is the second ITV commission for Poison Pen, after Adultery. ITV’s drama boss Polly Hill calls The Dark “a compelling new series featuring a fearless female detective in a chilling Scottish tale.”

Filming will begin in 2025 in and around Glasgow. The Dark is being produced in partnership with ITV Studios, who will distribute the series internationally.
